A Dog Owner’s Paradise: Why Roxborough and Manayunk are the Best Neighborhoods for Dogs

By Jon Miller, Realtor®

Living in Northwest Philly, specifically in the Roxborough/Manayunk/Wissahickon area, offers a ton of space, whether you live in a home with a spacious backyard (there are quite a few in this neighborhood!), or you’re adventuring among the trails in Wissahickon Park.

Roxborough and Manayunk are great spots to live for a ton of reasons. Maybe you moved out here so that your kids would be able to have room to explore Philly’s outdoor spaces… or maybe it was so your dog could sniff out every tree and trail, and live out its best life that it didn’t have the space for in the city.

There’s no better place in Philly to be a dog owner, or a dog, for that matter, than Roxborough and Manayunk. It’s a dog owner’s paradise out near the Wissahickon, and here’s why:

There are a ton of dog parks… oh, and 50 miles of trails in the Wissahickon

When your dog is a social butterfly who loves running around with the neighborhood pups and making new friends, there’s no better place to be than a dog park, and Roxborough & Manayunk have plenty, including Pretzel Park, Gorgas Park, Roxborough Dog Park and more neighborhood parks with dog runs.

If you’re into hiking or running, and your dog is too, there’s also the seemingly-endless network of trails that make up the Wissahickon, right in your backyard. After a long hike with the dog, cool off at Kitchen’s Lane, where many dog owners take their pups for a swim. Insider tip: there’s parking nearby, too!

Dog-friendly restaurants, cafes, and breweries are everywhere

Along Main Street in Manayunk, and Ridge Ave. in Roxborough, are plenty of restaurants, bars, and cafes with outdoor seating, and some even have dog-friendly menus! And for the months when it’s too cold to sit outside, Wissahickon Brewery, located just in between East Falls and Manayunk, allows dogs to come inside the brewery with their owners, so you can drink locally-brewed beer with your dog, and so many other dogs in the neighborhood.

Bonus: the Pet Friendly Dog Bakery in Manayunk not only sells pet supplies, but also has play areas for dogs, both indoor and outdoor, depending on the season.

There are plenty of reputable veterinarians and doggie day care facilities

It’s always reassuring to know that your dog is having the best day ever at doggie day care while you’re at work. From Little White Dog near the Wissahickon train station, to Scallywags Dog Daycare near the Manayunk train station, it’s easy to drop off your dog and head to work, and Manayunk Pooch Scoochers are just up the hill.

There are a few veterinarians in the neighborhood, too, and they might even be walkable from your home (so it’ll be easy to trick your dog into going to the vet while out on a walk – always a plus!). If you just moved into the neighborhood and are looking for a new vet, check out the Animedic Veterinary Hospital, Roxborough Animal Hospital, or the Wissahickon Creek Veterinary Hospital.

Being able to hike, run, and explore one of Philly’s most scenic neighborhoods with your four-legged friends, while knowing that the resources you need are right down the street, is incomparable, and just another reason to add to the list of reasons why the Roxborough Manayunk area of Northwest Philly is a great place to live.

See you at the dog park!
