You can’t walk a block in Center City without coming across a great restaurant. But, there’s also some lesser known spots that are definitely worth trying. Around the college campuses in the city you’ll find a huge variety of food trucks, but in Center City you’ll find smaller food carts along most of the main streets that shouldn’t be missed.
One cart in particular has been my mainstay for a couple of years, Shah Best Halal on 16th between Sansom and Chestnut Streets where for $5 you can get a delicious Halal chicken or lamb over rice and a drink. I don’t think you can beat that.
Halal food is prepared according to Muslim tradition and rules in the Quran with rules similar to those of Kosher food. For food to be Halal, it must be prepared in a specific manner by a Muslim and blessed.
I first came across Shah at the recommendation of a friend in my office and I was addicted right away. I had started out getting the lamb over rice and then, at the recommendation of the owner, tried the chicken and that’s become my staple. The chicken is grilled in a mix of spices and herbs that packs a lot of flavor. The combination of a creamy white cucumber sauce and a spicy red sauce on top make the perfect combination with just the right amount of bite.
If you’re in the Rittenhouse Square area and looking for the best deal on lunch in town, check this place out. You won’t be disappointed.
The Philadelphia area is a great place to live and work and I love sharing all that Philadelphia has to offer. From our unique neighborhoods and towns, great parks, amazing restaurants and nightlife, museums, and events there’s no shortage of things to do and see in, and near, Philadelphia. Since 2010, I’ve been helping people buy and sell their homes in the Philadelphia area specializing in Center City, Northwest Philadelphia, and the Montgomery County suburbs bordering the city. Outside of being a Realtor®, I’m a dad to an amazing little girl, husband to an amazing wife, and dog-dad to Frida. Together, we enjoy taking advantage of everything that Philadelphia has to offer and exploring the many parks, festivals, and events in the city. Since 2017, I’ve been supporting KenCrest through volunteer efforts including organizing cleaning and painting days at their community homes, decorating for the holidays at children’s transitional homes, and coordinating fundraising and toy drives to support their efforts.
