  1. Take a Hike in the Wissahickon

One of the great things about living in Roxborough is the easy access to the Wissahickon Valley Park from just about anywhere in the neighborhood. Be sure to visit the Thomas Mill Covered Bridge, the fingerspan bridge, Devil’s Pool, and Valley Green Inn while you’re there.

  2. Take the Kids to the Playground

There are plenty of neighborhood playgrounds in Roxborough so it’s easy to get the kids out to play. There are playgrounds at Montgomery Field, La Noce Park, Wissahickon Neighbors Park, Kendrick Rec Center, Hillside Rec Center, Gorgas Park, Kelly Park, and Houston Playground. You can find spraygrounds at Houston Playground and Wissahickon Neighbors Park.

  3. Visit Leverington Cemetery

Leverington Cemetery is located in Central Roxborough along Ridge Avenue. The cemetery is open to the public during daytime hours. As you walk through you’ll notice a lot of names of neighborhood streets in the area. The cemetery dates back to 1645. It was almost sold to developers soon after WWII. A local family purchased the property and still operates the cemetery today.

  4. Go to the Farmer’s Market

There are two Farmer’s Markets in Roxborough, one at Gorgas Park and one at W.B. Saul High School on Henry Avenue. Stop by and pick up fresh local produce for the week.

  5. Visit the Horses

If you love horses, visit Courtesy Stables in Andorra and the pasture at W.B. Saul High School. I bring my daughter by to see the horses regularly and they’re both great spots to visit and to take pictures. Courtesy Stables also offers horseback riding lessons

  6. Hit the Gym

Looking for workout? Roxborough has several gyms. If you’re looking for big box gym, check out LA Fitness in Andorra. This gym offers a lap pool and basketball courts. The YMCA on Domino Lane has fitness equipment and a pool. They also offer on-site babysitting while you work out. There’s a Planet Fitness located near Gorgas Park in Central Roxborough which offers great prices and casual atmosphere. If you’re looking for a cross-fit style workout, check out F45 in Central Roxborough.

  7. Go to the Dog Park

Roxborough is great for dog lovers. The streets are walkable and it’s easy to take Fido for a hike in the Wissahickon Valley Park. If you’re looking for an off-leash dog park to let your dog run around until she’s tired, take your furry friend to the Roxborough Dog Park on Mitchell Street. The fenced-in park provides plenty of space to run and play.

  8. Dinner Out

One thing that I’m really excited about is all of the great restaurants in Roxborough. Be sure to check out Darling Nikki’s BBQ at Tavern on Ridge, Taylor’s Cafe, The White Yak Tibetan Restaurant, and A Tutti Pizza. Check out some of my other neighborhood favorites here

  9. Go to The Custard Stand

C&C Creamery, known for years as The Custard Stand, may be one of the best spots for dessert in all of Philadelphia. The homemade custard and ice cream is delicious and even though the lines can be long they move pretty quickly. The Custard Stand is open from spring through fall and closes in winter.

  10. Play Golf

Walnut Lane Golf Club is a city-operated 18-hole golf course with a pro shop and a practice area. The course is reasonably priced and open to the public. The front 9 is a little less challenging than the back 9 and you’ll get some noise from Henry Avenue but there are also a lot of quieter holes that border the Wissahickon Valley Park.

  11. Youth Soccer

Roxborough United Soccer Club is a youth soccer organization that offers intramural training programs for kids from ages 2-9 and travel teams for boys and girls from U8 – U14. The Club formed in 2016 when the Roxborough Indians and the Houston Soccer Club merged. The club has a training and development partnership with the Philadelphia Union.

  12. Take a Yoga Class

Join Roots 2 Rise at Kendrick Rec Center for Yoga class. Kendrick also offers plenty of other programs including adult fitness classes, dance, gymnastics, and more.

  13. Make a Sign

Paint your own rustic sign at The Twisted Sign on Ridge Ave across from Starbucks. The studio offers BYOB painting classes where you can create your own custom wooden signs for gifts and home decoration.

  14. Game Night

Unplug from your phone and play any of over 500 board games at The Basement Board Game Cafe on Ridge Ave. The cafe is BYOB and offers coffee and light fare.

  15. Go Swimming

Kendrick Rec Center and Hillside Rec Center both have outdoor pools that are free to Philadelphia residents in the summer. The Roxborough YMCA has an indoor pool for year-round swimming. The Y also offers swim lessons.

  16. Take a Walk Around the Reservoir

The Upper Roxborough Reservoir Preserve is a nature area located on Port Royal Avenue. The Preserve was revitalized into a nature area and walking path by volunteers with theFriends of Upper Roxborough Reservoir Preserve. When you walk around the Preserve you’ll find great views of the reservoir and local wildlife. There are a couple of spots where you’ll also find views of Roxborough and Center City.

  17. Annual Events

There are a number of great events in Roxborough held throughout the year. Some of my favorites are the Art is Life Festival, Roxtoberfest, and The Harvest Festival at Gorgas Park. Gorgas Park also has a great summer series that includes outdoor movies and music.
