Living in Northwest Philly, specifically in the Roxborough/Manayunk/Wissahickon area, offers a ton of space, whether you live in a home with a spacious backyard (there are quite a few in this neighborhood!), or you’re adventuring among the trails in Wissahickon Park.
Roxborough and Manayunk are great spots to live for a ton of reasons. Maybe you moved out here so that your kids would be able to have room to explore Philly’s outdoor spaces… or maybe it was so your dog could sniff out every tree and trail, and live out its best life that it didn’t have the space for in the city.
Meet Rachael Balascak: Wissahickon Resident, Family Photographer, and Graphic Designer.
Rachael Balascak is the owner of Rae Hearts Design and a resident of the Wissahickon neighborhood. Rachael and I met up at Taylor’s on Ridge for some coffee and to talk about her work as a family photographer and graphic designer, how to get kids to cooperate at a photo shoot, and her favorite places & things to do in Roxborough & Manayunk.
What advice do you have for parents when doing a photoshoot?
Rachael’s recommends that parents “Don’t expect every picture to be 100% because your kids may not cooperate right away. The candid pictures are just as good as the posed pictures so let them run around, let them play a little bit.”
If you’re looking for a place to go apple picking this fall then check out Solebury Orchards in New Hope, PA. Solebury Orchards is located about an hour from the neighborhood, about twice as far as Linvilla Orchards, but it’s well-worth the trip.
We’ve been going to Solebury Orchards for our fall apple picking since 2017. It works well for us because we usually meet friends who live in New Jersey and it’s centrally located between us. Plus, you can also spend some time in New Hope and Lambertville while you’re there.
A few weeks ago postcards and letters were mailed to Philadelphia residents offering a protection plan for sewer and water lines. The letters included the official Seal of Philadelphia on the envelopes to keep them from looking like a scam, but a lot of people are asking if the program is legitimate. Here’s an overview of the background, what the plan is, and some insight to help you make a decision on whether or not to purchase the protection plan.
Leverington Cemetery was established in 1745. The cemetery is located in Central Roxborough next to Bob’s Diner on Ridge Ave. The Cemetery includes graves of soldiers from both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.
The Pretzel Park Dog Park is an off-leash dog park located along Cresson and Cotton Streets one block away from Main Street in Manayunk. The park is a great place for dogs to run around and get some exercise and a great place to meet other local dog lovers.
The Upper Roxborough Reservoir Preserve is a 34-acre park bound by Port Royal Ave, Lare St, Summit Ave, and Eva St in Roxborough, Philadelphia. There’s a small parking lot on the corner of Port Royal and Lare. Stairs lead up to the path around the park where you’ll see views of the reservoir, a scenic field, and woods. There are two vistas along the path where you’ll find views of Upper Roxborough and the Center City skyline. The Upper Roxborough Reservoir Preserve is a great place to bring kids and for dog-walking (dogs must be on a leash).
